DHA eNews - $6 Billion For Forest Improvements In $1,000 Billion Infrastructure Bill
The bipartisan infrastructure moving through Congress includes at least $5.75 billion for restoring, monitoring, and researching forests, including policies that could make it easier to prepare for wildfires.

The EPA and the U.S. Department of Army plan to revise the definition of "waters of the United States" (WOTUS). This would restore the regulations defining WOTUS that were in place before 2015, consistent with relevant Supreme Court decisions.
The proposal is designed to ensure the future of America is made in America by all of America's workers. It includes strengthening Buy America requirements and the most robust changes to the implementation of the Buy America Act in almost 70 years.

The total export value of plywood increased by 31.4% vs. one year ago.
Vietnam exported wood and wooden products worth more than $8 billion in the first and second quarters, an increase of more than 62% vs. one year ago. Exports reached a record high of nearly $1.6 billion in June.

American OEM, based in Burns, Tennessee, has been acquired by AHF Products of Mountville, Pennsylvania. The acquisition adds an eighth wood manufacturing facility and three brands to AHF's portfolio.
David W. Lamb, a cabinetmaker in Canterbury, New Hampshire, won the Grand Prize in the Veneer Tech Craftsman's Challenge for 2021. The winning design, chosen from 88 entries, was a contemporary styled furniture piece called the New Hampshire Secretary.
Raute Corporation received orders for machinery and equipment worth about EUR16 million from the Segezha Group in Russia. The orders include new production lines and upgrades to existing lines to increase veneer production, as well as production lines to further process plywood.
Keith Christman will become the next president of the Decorative Hardwoods Association beginning September 1. Keith was the managing director for plastics markets for 10 years at the American Chemistry Council and a 30-year veteran of that association in various positions. Kip Howlett, DHA's current president, will remain for a transition period as DHA celebrates its 100th anniversary.
Fifteen conservation organizations have signed an open letter to the U.S. Forest Service calling for more aggressive forest management practices, including thinning by selective logging, removing the branches and tops of fallen trees, and taking these materials out of the forest to be used as wood chips or other useful products.
Metsä Spring Ltd. and Innomost Ltd. have entered into a new venture to use birch bark components in a range of ingredients for use in cosmetics and personal products including skin, hair, body, and oral care as well as decorative cosmetics.
